Government grants are budget awarded by government branches and institutions to a specific person or organization for a specified purpose. However, unlike government loans, grant applications that are awarded to organizations does not have to be paid back to the government. Government grants can come from the local, federal or even state government.

While grants seem like great ways to get budgets for you and your organization’s projects, getting one is not quite easy. Not only are grant applications tedious, it also takes a lot of time to process and the requirement list is extensive.

Here are the basic steps in applying for a government grants:

Study different government grants

Research different government grants and which government branches offers them. There are websites such as www.grants.gov which provides listing of possible government grants. There is also information available on which government branches offers grants, and description on a specific grant’s eligibility requirements. Studying different grant opportunities will also give you an idea which government grant is ideal for your purpose or project.

Check eligibility

First part of grant applications is eligibility. Check a particular grant’s eligibility requirements and see if you and your organization fit and can comply with the requirements. Different grants require different eligibility requirements. Make sure you are eligible before you attempt to apply for a certain grant opportunity.

Register and Apply

Sites like www.grants.gov will require you to register first before you can make an application. Once you’ve decided on which government grant to apply for and has confirmed that you are eligible for it, the next step is to fill out an application form and submit it through Workspace.

Track and Wait

Once an application has been submitted, you will be given a tracking number which you can use to check the status of grant application. Approval can take as long as a few weeks so it’s important to check grant applications as frequent and as regular as possible
